How come when I record, there is like 10 min of silence before what I recorded starts playing?

First off, are you using Virtual Audio Streaming MP3 recorder? If yes, please try Virtual Audio Streaming Wav recorder. VAS Wav recorder should removes all silence automatically. See:

Second, a few audio player (such as itune) continues sending silence audio data to sound cards even after finish playing a song. In this case, you might record silence. Just restart itune to clean the previous audio playing status.
